The Showdown: Michelle Williams in 2006 vs. Reese Witherspoon in 2009
The Editor’s Pick: Michelle Williams
Who Made the Call?: Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor
Why She Chose It:
If this were a contest on who has the best hair, Reese would get my vote — hands down. She literally looks like she walked off the page of a Pantene ad with her crazy-shiny pin-straight strands. And those bangs were enough to make me consider reaching for the scissors. (True story: I remember bringing this photo to the salon and having a lengthy discussion with my hairstylist about getting fringe. And it’s still saved in the “maybe haircuts” folder on my desktop. What? You don’t have one of those folders?) But as you know, this isn’t about the hair. This is about the gowns. And Michelle’s marigold Vera Wang design totally trumps Reese’s Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci creation.

Check out the full Oscars Gown Showdown bracket here!

I know there are probably legions of fervent Reese fans who are ready to picket outside my apartment, but let me explain. This was Michelle’s first Oscars appearance ever, and I love that she totally went for something bold and fresh. With the vibrant color, ruffled neckline and ruching at the waist, it’s no surprise this design launched the nominee to the top of best dressed lists.

Reese’s deep-amethyst gown, on the other hand (and if you’re a fervent Reese supporter, stop reading), falls a bit flat. In fact, I was slightly surprised it was chosen as one of the original gowns in the bracket. It feels like so many strapless gowns I’ve seen before, and even though I think the actress could make a burlap sack look chic, I also have to be honest with my feelings and give the big “W” to Michelle.

Do you agree with me or should Reese Witherspoon win this round? Vote in the Oscars Gown Bracket and check back tomorrow to see who comes out on top!

What to Wear To Your Oscars Party This Weekend

We almost can’t believe that the Oscars are on Sunday! We already know what we’re wearing: Jeggings that will accommodate the treats someone’s bound to bring in to the office, and the closest thing to a sweatshirt that’s not a sweatshirt we own, so we can be comfortable for the long haul. If you’ve got a slightly more festive evening planned with pals, you may still be looking for the appropriate outfit — somewhere in between “ripped jeans” and “ballgown.” Below, three options for three types of parties. Let us know your plans in the comments!

Lea michele album partyChristopher Polk/Getty

Your Crush Is Going to Be There: You want to look chic and sexy but not like you tried too hard. This is that outfit. Lea Michele‘s J Brand leather skinnies show off long legs and are comfortable enough to sit cross-legged on the floor if need be. Her fitted quilted blazer skims curves and invites touch. Her heels are cute but casual and the tee is comfy and sheer (bonus!).

You’re Going for the Snacks: Reese Witherspoon is the master of denim looks that are easy to whip up, but always have one cool element to keep them from being too snoozeworthy. Here she tops a boxy Three Dots shirt with a cropped leather jacket and adds ankle-strap leopard heels and a yellow bag for extra punch. You’ll look so effortlessly stylish, no one will suspect you just showed up for the “Waffles of Wall Street” (or insert your own Oscars-theme food pun here).

Jessica Alba paris fashion week

The Host Is a Dress Code Stickler: So the evite said Black Tie, and you know you’ll be barred from the champagne if you don’t participate to a point. Take a cue from Jessica Alba and choose a cute (and still cozy) black-and-white look (hers is Nina Ricci). Top it with a coat-as-cape for a glamorous effect, then add matching lipstick and heels to look put together.

Reese Witherspoon Is Starting a Top-Secret Lifestyle Project! Here's What We're Hoping to See ...

First there was Martha. Then Gwyneth. Then Blake. Now another famous Hollywood blonde is getting in on the lifestyle game. Reese Witherspoon has plans to join the genre with an “omnichannel [lifestyle] venture, which will emphasize Witherspoon’s Southern roots and personal style,” WWD reports, adding that she poached a top exec from preppy retailer C. Wonder to launch the brand in 2015.

Unfortunately for us, though, there are no other details, so we had to get imaginative. Below, the style team rounded up their dream features for Reese’s “omnichannel” lifestyle site, from instructional videos to statement tees. Tell us what you’d like to see in the comments!

RELATED PHOTOS: Love Her Outfit! The styles the stars wear that we wanna steal.

Bronwyn Barnes, Senior Style Editor: The Art of the “Breakover!” Has anyone ever made a better after-breakup entrance than Reese did at the 2007 Golden Globes? That dress! Those bangs! That moment even has its own Wikipedia page now. Reese could totally launch a line of sexy dresses and give heart-to-heart video advice to fans to propel them to so-over-it status.

Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: Maybe it’s her impressive résumé of rom-com credits or her bubbly cheerleader-like personality, but I could totally see Reese as a motivational speaker. However, she probably doesn’t have time to bring her sunny disposition on a college campus tour. That’s why I’d think it be awesome if she launched her own line of slogan tees as part of her new lifestyle venture.

Not only would it spark up some friendly competition with her pal Matthew McConaughey‘s Just Keep Livin’ brand (All Right, All Right, All Right!), but she can pull from her own movie catalogue for the sayings — “Sweet Intentions,” “This Means Peace,” “Legally …”? Okay, we’re stuck on that one. Share your suggestions below! (P.S.: If Reese shows up on QVC promoting these shirts, I want some credit!)

Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I want Reese to just start her own street style blog. The woman has elevated the art of walking around in Rag & Bone booties and Koral jeans into a science. She always looks radiantly sunny, bag just so, hat perfectly positioned, and more often than not, an armful of flowers or a chic shopping bag to give us just a touch of that A-list envy. Reese, don’t keep us hanging! Tell us your secrets!

John Soper, Editorial Assistant: Delta NUws! Our favorite lady in pink returns to give us advice as Legally Blonde‘s Elle Woods that we can use our daily lives. From shooting your college application video to picking out the perfect engagement outfit, who better to seek counsel from than our favorite Harvard law grad? (Disclaimer: Effectiveness of “Bend and Snap” may vary.)

From Date Night to Brunch, Exactly What to Wear This Weekend

Your weekend should be stress-free, which means avoiding all wardrobe-related meltdowns. (You know the ones where you just stare blankly into your closet on the verge of tears.) So we rounded up three celeb-inspired looks to take you from a fun night out through Monday morning looking like a pro.

Krysten Ritter crop topFameFlynet

Saturday night: We know what you’re thinking: This look is bold. But it’s time to move past your fear of crop tops. And if you want to take a baby step at trying the trend, we suggest you use Krysten Ritter as your spiritual crop top guide. The star shows off the most flattering part of her midriff (above the belly-button and below the breast bone) in a high-waisted pencil skirt and matching shirt (both Jonathan Simkhai). Plus, coordinating sets are huge right now.

Guess what? We found very similar separates for less than $100 (together!). Nab this I ‘Heart’ Ronson for JC Penney crop top to wear with this Express knit midi skirt. Then pair with your favorite pumps for an outfit that your friends will want to swipe and that guy you are dating will want to, well, you know …

Allison Williams pants
Matt Baron/Beimages

Sunday brunch: To be honest, we just wanted an excuse to talk about how amazing Allison Williams looks in this photo. (Flawless, right?) And we also want a pair of her cropped drawstring Brunello Cucinelli pants. (They look ridiculously comfortable and chic at the same time!) Then we realized they’d be perfect for brunch, so we decided to track down a similar pair.

Our pick? This style from Lilla P. And since we know you have a white button-down in your closet, the rest is pretty easy. (P.S.: If you’re not the type to wear high heels to brunch, we think you can totally dress down this look with flats or a wedge sneaker.)

Reese Witherspoon black separates

Monday morning: Monday morning would be so much easier if we woke up looking like Reese Witherspoon in this exact outfit. Her chic black menswear-inspired look feels like the fresh take on the pencil skirt, collared chambray shirt combo we’ve been living in.

Want to swipe a page from her style handbook? You might want to get a pair of these ASOS pants to team with a blazer like this one (also ASOS). Add a white tee and pile on your favorite gold necklaces to complete the look. By the way, since the weather isn’t sandal-friendly in most of the country, we’d pair the look with a great pump: These Gamin d’Orsay heels from InStyle‘s new Nine West collection are currently in our shopping carts!

It's the First Weekend of Spring! Here's What to Wear

How should you celebrate the first weekend of spring? By throwing a going way party for your tights drawer. Okay, it’s not exactly that time yet, but it is time to bring out the self tanner and let your legs see the sun. So we rounded up three celeb-inspired looks to take you from a fun night out through Monday morning looking like a pro.

Shay Mitchell LBDD Dipasupil/Getty

Saturday night: After a long week, it’s exciting to dress up. Whether you have a date on the books or just want to get a little glam with friends, Shay Mitchell’s LBD screams, “It’s the weekend!”

Unless you want to shell out $520 for the Pretty Little Liars star’s Yeojin Bae lace mini, we think you should check out this way cheaper option — a Forever 21 bodycon number for under $25. You can even layer it with a leather jacket and pair with booties for a more dressed-down feel.

Reese Witherspoon dress, booties, hat
FameFlynet

Sunday brunch: Reese Witherspoon has been getting a lot of style play from us recently, because the actress keeps turning it out. And her latest look — a blue Isabel Marant dress, denim jacket and Rag & Bone booties — is super easy to steal.

Get a similar vibe with this blue drop-waist Lucky dress that you can wear from now through fall. And since Coachella is coming up, an easy way to share in the festival spirit (without the whole flower crown thing) is by sporting a fun wide-brim topper like this one from Urban Outfitters.

Nikki Reed animal print jacket
Araya Diaz/WireImage

Monday morning: No, we’re not suggesting you show up to work showing a slice of midriff. We really picked Nikki Reed’s look because of that awesome, spring-friendly leopard midi coat. Okay, and we wanted to give our Celeb Style Council member a special shoutout.

Want to recreate her look? (Yea, you do.) Then pair a similar topper (we have our eyes on this jacquard one from Anne Taylor) with some black trousers and a coordinating top from your closet. Add a pop of color via some colorful pumps like this chic Chinese Laundry pair (now 20 percent off!). You’ll be starting off the week on a (style) high note.

Tinder date? Brunch followed by beers and March Madness? Early morning meeting Monday? We have the perfect outfit for whatever you have on the deck this weekend thanks to three fashion-forward stars.

Beyonce skirtCourtesy Beyonce

Saturday night: We love a good not-appropriate-for-work pencil skirt. They’re perfect for that in-between time of year when you don’t want to wear tights, but you’re not ready to whip out the minis. (It’s still chilly!) Oh, and they’re really figure flattering, and everyone in Hollywood is wearing them, including Beyoncé. We love how she styled her striped Topshop bottom with another huge trend: the graphic sweatshirt. (How could she help striking a pose in this outfit?)

If you want the full Bey experience, you can nab her skirt for $68! The body-con lycra material makes it date night appropriate. If you want a more simple color palette (and a better price tag), this Bar III one is on major sale at Macy’s. As for the sweatshirt, editors have this beaded one from Joyus in our shopping carts. Top with some neutral pumps like the singer, and you’re set.

Reese Witherspoon jacket and jeans

Sunday brunch: Agggaiinnnnnnnnn. We hear your cries from here, but Reese Witherspoon is constantly turning it out in the street style department (maybe it has something to do with her new lifestyle blog?). And if you are planning a marathon day of brunching — and maybe some boozing — the actress’s outfit is easy, but still looks super cute and put together.

Basically, all you need is the jacket. This White House Black Market design looks so similar to Reese’s Tory Burch topper, and it’s a fraction of the price. Team with skinnies and your choice of footwear. Outfit made.

Rachel Zoe dress
Bryan Bedder/Getty

Monday morning: The first thing we thought when we saw Rachel Zoe in this Valentino dress was “Wow, she had a baby like 5 minutes ago.” Then we thought it would be the perfect look to wear to the office on Monday. So we had to hunt a similar one down.

Enter this ASOS swing dress with a crochet collar and long sleeves on sale now for less than $40. Dress it up with some great pumps and you’ll kick the week off on a style high note.

Nothing’s worse than a weekend wardrobe meltdown. That’s why we pulled together three star looks to give you some inspiration for whatever plans you have on the docket. Warning: We’re not responsible for any splurges made beyond this point.

Sophia Bush leather skinnies, floral shoesDara Kushner/INF

Saturday Night: You already know floral prints are a huge trend right now, but if you show up on a date wearing an outfit covered in oversize blooms, it might not get the desired reaction from the guy. So we suggest starting out in small doses — for example, Sophia Bush’s Stuart Weitzman pumps. One of our editors owns them, and we have to say, they’re even prettier in person. But if you don’t want to lay out $650, these Guess show-stoppers are a fraction of the price and will look just as great with a pair of black coated skinnies and crisp white top. (Fun Fact: Sophia actually wore this outfit for a video segment at the PEOPLE offices!!)

Reese Witherspoon printed shirtBroadImage

Sunday Brunch: If you spend most of your week in heels, it’s nice to go casual every once in a while. Especially if you’re going to be sipping on bottomless mimosas and carbo-loading with your friends. That’s why we’re all about Reese Witherspoon‘s flats and denim look.

Since you already have the jeans and flats in your closet, the only thing you really need to pull of a similar look is a spotted blouse. This ECI one would look great with jeans, or a pencil skirt for work, plus, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Taylor swift pink coatGetty

Monday Morning: If you haven’t invested in a spring topper yet, print this photo of Taylor Swift out immediately and carry it around with you in your purse until you find one just like it. Not only is the pastel pink hue a must-have trend this season, but it’s the perfect thing to wear on those in-between weather days (which we’re having a lot lately in N.Y.C.) and will look great over any work dress you pair it with. (We love Swift’s Jennifer Behr headband for a little extra sparkle on what can often be a blah morning.)

This blush Asos coat is currently in our shopping carts, and it’s on sale so if you’re trying to channel your inner Swift, you might want to order one quickly! Plus, it’s the kind of piece that won’t go out of style.

What are you going to wear this weekend? Tell us in the comments!

Dress Up Your Tresses This Weekend With Stars' Favorite Hair Accessories (and the Looks for Less!)

Star loved hair accessoriesGetty (3)

With summer right around the corner (trust us, we’ve been counting down the days), we’ve been on the hunt for the trendiest hair accessories to rock when the warmer weather hits. We’ve looked to some of our favorite stylish stars for hair-spiration, as they are the ultimate trendsetters — and we’ve found a few must-wears for the long weekend.

First up is Reese Witherspoon, who clearly knows how to style a statement hat. Her casual, cool look is perfect for shielding against the sun while out and about running errands. To pull off the look yourself, wear hair loose and opt for simple accessories so the hat remains the focal point of the outfit. Two of our favorite styles to try: This $14.80 Forever 21 style and J. Crew’s $58 Panama hat.

RELATED PHOTOS: Star-loved hair trends you’ve got to try this summer!

Next is Emmy Rossum, wearing Coachella’s favorite headpiece: the flower crown. The sweet and flirty floral tiara is the go-to accessory worn at the Indio, Calif., music festival, but it can be easily worn outside of the bandstands and incorporated into your everyday look. Pair the fun crown with very few accessories accessories (as the crown is bold enough) and be sure to wear your hair down for a fully laid-back glam effect. (A breezy attitude helps pull this one off too.) Try it with Topshop’s $28 daisy garland or the Johnny Loves Rosie style for $66.69 on Asos.

And, of course, there’s Katy Perry, in a mod, stylish and more relaxed take on the classic headband. (Plus, the top-tied style is a little easier to pull off than the other star fave, the headwrap.) We love how easy and effortless this look is for summer – it will help keep flyaways (and sweat!) at bay in the humid, hot weather. For a fun, bold look, pair with the season’s hottest lip color: coral. Remington has a set of black-and-white wraps (2 for $5), and we also like L. Erickson’s black-and-white silk scarf headband.

Want to try something new in your tresses this season? We’ve seen tons of adorable hair accessories cross our desk, and it’s only a matter of time before we the stars are sporting them too. Get a jumpstart on the celebs by picking up one of our favorites, like these Ban.do bright bobby pins ($10 for 4), L. Erickson’s cool and colorful pony cuffs or a fun retro scrunchie from Topshop (Cressida Bonas would be so proud!).

What’s your favorite way to style your strands in the summer? Will you give any of these trends a try?

Reese Witherspoon Is the Style MVP at TIFF and Here Are the Photos to Prove It

For her upcoming role in Wild, Reese Witherspoon spends most of the film bare-faced in a T-shirt. But to promote the flick at the Toronto International Film Festival, the actress has been pulling out all the glam stops. Let’s review.

Witherspoon started her TIFF tour doing press for her other movie The Good Lie in two very chic looks: a textured deep purple Dolce & Gabbana bell-shaped dress for the premiere (teamed with a plum smoky eye) and a black-and-white spotted Saint Laurent shirt dress, which she wore with a bright pink lip and neutral ankle-strap heels at the photo call

RELATED PHOTOS: All the looks from the Toronto Film Festival

For her Wild promo day, the 38-year-old star chose a pale yellow-and-white A-line Roland Mouret design and fuchsia lip for a day event, and went all-out glam in a black Saint Laurent dress featuring a cutout at the neckline and sequin bodice. She finished the premiere look with a hot-red lip and Giuseppe Zanotti sandals. (P.S.: We don’t think the star’s hair has ever looked better than it has in the past 48 hours.)

Not that we’d expect anything less than perfectly polished from the star, who recently said going completely fresh-faced in Wild was a little hard to get used to. “Oh, I’m southern — I like some makeup!” she told PEOPLE of her hiking-chic look. “It wasn’t easy.”

Reese Witherspoon has been on a serious style streak lately — she emerged as the clear fashion MVP at the Toronto International Film Festival and hasn’t missed a beat since (did you see what she wore to the Gone Girl premiere?). And to round out her month of fashion hits, the actress poses for the cover of Vogue looking killer in a red lace dress. Check out the photos — and stay tuned for one of Vogue‘s famous “73 Questions” videos in the star’s stunning house!

The actress poses in couture on the streets of Nashville, where she was filming Don’t Mess with Texas with Sofia Vergara. And though she still looks like her sweet Southern self in the photos, in her interview, she talks about trying to recalibrate her Hollywood image as someone who can be more than just a bubblegum Elle Woods type. “When people underestimate me, it’s actually a comfortable place for me,” she says in the interview. “‘Oh, that’s what you think I am; well, no, I’m not.’ I’m a complex human being. I have many different shades.”

For more from the actress on her upcoming role in Wild, check out Vogue.com or pick up the issue, on stands Oct. 1. Then grab some coffee and get ready to watch Witherspoon answer questions like “What’s your least favorite food?” and “What band, past or present, would you be a groupie for?” in the video below.

Dianna Agron, Camila Alves and Reese Witherspoon Make Day-to-Night Hair Look Like a Snap

What do Dianna Agron, Camila Alves and Reese Witherspoon have in common? Amazing style, obviously. So, we were thrilled to see all three beauties step out to not one but two events yesterday, rocking hair and makeup looks for both occasions worthy of placement on Pinterest boards across America. Let’s look at how they turned heads, twice in one day.

Dianna Agron attends the 2014 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Event and DinnerGetty (2)

To juxtapose Agron’s sweet sky blue vintage-style dress, worn to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Event, hairstylist Christian Wood and makeup artist Georgie Eisdell gave the actress a modern feel with radiant skin and dramatic slicked-back hair. Eisdell created a “fresh” glow by prepping Agron’s skin with iS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum and Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream — and topping off her foundation with Hourglass’s Ambient Lighting Palette for allover luminosity. Then Wood “toughened up” the look with a sleek pony. He applied Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil to her damp platinum hair before brushing it back, then once he got the pony in place, he layered Fekkai Sheer Sculpt Gel on small sections of her hair to create the appearance of glossy highlights.

For the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund dinner later that day, Agron emerged in a notice-me floral ensemble — so of course she opted for rock star hair and makeup to match. “Hot in pink,” Eisdell rightly captioned the look on Instagram. For her makeup, “I wanted there to be a coolness about it, so I went straight for the eyes,” she says. To amp up her lids, Eisdell lined them with Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner in Black Ink, then applied NARS Shadow in Sycorax. As for hair, the two only had had 30 minutes for “a quick change!” explained Wood on Instagram. Keeping the original part from the previous look, he added faux-hawk-like volume. “I decided a textured updo with a little height at the front would give the outfit an edge,” he said.

RELATED PHOTOS: See what your favorite stars are wearing this week!

Alves, seemingly inspired by her lines in her ivory Ashi Studio dress, went for a sleek look for her appearance at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Event. The naturally curly girl went pin straight and added drama with a deep center part. Her nude-tone makeup highlighted her perfectly shaped arches, while a lighter shadow brightened up her eyes. But at night, for her appearance at the American Cinematique Award Gala honoring her husband, she transitioned from fashion-forward to full-on glam. Instead of matte skin, she exuded a dewy glow. Alves also traded her very muted nude lip color for a pinker pout. Lastly, she gave her tresses some bend and texture before sweeping it into a chignon.

As Witherspoon proves time and time again, a little wave goes a long way. For her appearance at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Event, as well as at the American Cinematheque Award Gala honoring Matthew McConaughey, the actress opted for the timeless style. “The daytime [look] was more voluminous, playful and all around very girly,” says her hairstylist, Giannandrea. But for evening? “Femme fatal waves,” said the stylist on Instagram. He applied Macadamia Professional Oil before refining the waves around her face and defining her side part for a more chic result (also amping up her nighttime vibe? A vibrant lip). “This is a great style to transition from daytime into night — but shine is a must!” advises the pro. The way the star works her signature style, we’d have to agree.

Our Favorite Beauty Looks This Week, From Reese's Wild Lip to Camilla's Smoky Eye

$

Usually, we spend this time on a Friday debating the best (and worst) red carpet looks. But this week, we found ourselves gushing about all the fab celeb beauty looks on the red carpet — so we decided to share our faves instead. And frankly, after seeing all this fabulous celebrity makeup inspiration, it’s going to be tough to stay out of Sephora this weekend. Below, check out three looks we were loving.

Reese Witherspoon, Amber Heard and Camilla Belle beautyJeffrey Mayer/WireImage(2); Donato Sardella; Stefa

Reese Witherspoon‘s Orange Lipstick: Who can pull off a white dress and orange lips when it’s not summer? Reese can, and she proved that at the Wild premiere in Beverly Hills. The actress teamed her Zac Posen dress with a stunning tangerine shade on her pout and metallic copper eyeshadow. And her simple side-swept chignon softened the entire look. –Brittany Talarico, Style News Editor

RELATED PHOTOS: See the best red carpet hair from every angle

Amber Heard’s Unexpected Edge: When you’re wearing a Giambattista Valli Couture floral design at a dinner celebrating the designer’s collaboration with M.A.C., it can be easy to play it safe with your hair and makeup because, well, everyone’s probably looking at the stunning dress. But when you’re Amber Heard, everyone’s just looking at you … period. In my opinion, Heard pulls off the ever-elusive dark lip, because it’s unexpected against the girly notes of the gown. But if you take a closer look at what she’s wearing, striped undies are poking through the skirt! This look needs edge, and she gave it. Plus she deserves an award (or her stylist Adir Abergel does!) for this enviably undone updo, which is beyond stunning from all angles. –Catherine Kast, Style Writer

Camilla Belle’s, Well, Everything: I don’t even know why I like Camilla Belle’s makeup look here so much. All I know is that I saw this photo of her at a Net-a-Porter event for the Rosetta Getty launch and I was all about it. The mauve smoky eye is so striking. The just-bitten pink lip is so alluring. And her perfect skin (smooth and porcelain and just dewy enough) is the ideal canvas to set these things off. In fact, makeup artists everywhere are pinning this photo to their inspiration boards as a master class in how to apply blush. The best part? You could totally do this look yourself for a big event when you want to look done and polished but not Too Much. –Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor

Stuff Your Face With Style and Grace: Steal These 4 Cute (but Comfy!) Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

$

Thanksgiving brings two conflicting interests to the table (so to speak). On one hand, you want to look pulled-together and cute — you’re seeing family and friends you haven’t seen in ages! On the other hand, you want to eat your body weight in mashed potatoes and Grandma’s cookies. So what’s a girl to do? We’ve got a few ideas. Well actually, Victoria Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, Olivia Palermo and Taylor Swift do: they’ve all stepped out in super-chic looks that are comfy enough to wear while stuffing your face.

Thanksgiving Outfits Getty(2); FameFlynet; AKM-GSI

If your fam likes to go fancy, get inspired by Beckham’s chunky sweater and floor-length skirt. A maxi is one of those sneaky pieces that actually feels like pajamas but looks elegant enough to wear on the red carpet. Opt for one with a forgiving waist, pair it with an oversize knit top (maybe go for a hint of color here since you’re bound to end up in lots of #turkeyday Instapics) and pair with sleek boots and tousled side-swept waves. A gold chain belt peeking out will amp up the glam even more.

RELATED PHOTOS: Love Her Outfit! Tons of star style inspiration, all in one place

The next look, seen on Witherspoon, disguises its comfy factor thanks to polished details like a leopard-print sweater, crisp white collar and emerald pointy suede pumps. (Just make sure your skinnies have lots of stretch!) Then copy the star by sweeping you hair into a glossy ponytail and keeping a green juice handy (trust us, you’re going to want it tomorrow). Bonus: Her lack of chunky layers will still look sleek paired with an apron if you happen to be hosting.

Next up, Palermo shows us the power of a chic outer layer. While there’s nothing particularly special about a cream sweater and wide-leg jean, her cape-style brown sweater with a thick fur-trimmed hem seriously elevates her overall look without trying too hard. Throw one on over some basics, add a pretty bag and you’re good to go.

Finally, there’s Miss Swift, who basically looks like the poster girl for a cozy Thanksgiving. Her color palette is so on point (hunter green and deep cranberry scream “November”) plus, jeggings with an oversize poncho are the “actually dressed” equivalent of yoga pants and a hoodie. Top with a knit scarf, booties and a red lip for added Swift-like adorableness.

Will you steal outfit ideas from one of these babes? Already have your look planned out? Tell us what you’re wearing in the comments below!

Three Celeb-Tested Ways to Rock Leather Pants This Winter

Black skinnies. Everyone has ‘em. Everyone wants new ways to wear ‘em. Recently, celebs have stepped out in totally enviable ensembles with the black leather skinny as the base. See three different formulas for creating stylish, unfussy outfits with the shiny, luxe style.

THE TOUGH-CASUAL LEATHER

Bella Thorne takes a ton of fashion risks, so it’s no surprise that she occasionally wants to tone down her off-duty look. With this outfit, however, she’s still able to maintain a little punk flair, accessorizing with low flat-form white brogues and an All Saints moto jacket. Her Ray-Ban aviators add a little vintage vibe, but her undone center-part hair style feels very 2014. Consider this look if you want something easy (or, um, hit a holiday party really hard the night before).

THE BRUNCH-READY LEATHER

We’ve never really considered calling leather pants cozy, but Reese Witherspoon‘s bright crew-neck sweater and scarf add an element of ease to the look which — thanks to pointy-toe booties — could be taken in a more cosmopolitan direction. And we’re always all for a scarf that isn’t intricately tied because hey, how much easier is it to impeccably drape a silk scarf? Witherspoon’s Kenzo design is graphic, but in a classic red and blue palette so it’s got an All-American vibe without feeling downright patriotic, perfect for a weekend lunch date.

THE FORMAL(ISH) LEATHER

Olivia Palermo’s closet has long contained leather leggings, and she’s able to take them from the sidewalk to the red carpet at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in London. Seriously, when you’re model gorgeous but not an Angel, why even dare to compete in something slinky? The conservative blazer combo was just as eye-catching, if only because it was an understated version of sexy, which the event is definitely not known for (see here!). This is a fabulous style to consider adding to your holiday party rotation. And feel free to take beauty cues from Palermo too: the subtly tousled blowout and smoky bedroom eyes play off the sophistication of her belted smoking jacket.

The issue’s theme, “duets,” informed the photoshoot, which puts unexpected pairings of celebs together to “recreate the most iconic movie scene in the history of cinema: the kiss.” NYT photographer Constantine shot and directed nine individual kissing scenes to show all the ways in which the kiss has been portrayed in films.

Some of our favorite pairs? Dawson and Jenny Slate, who are ringing in the New Year with a makeout sesh in the back of a car. Or Stewart and Chadwick Boseman’s sensual smooch on the floor (she’s a passionate fan and he’s the rock star object of her desire). And then there are the cover stars, Witherspoon and Cumberbatch, who share an intimate kiss in costume. There’s plenty of inspiration for your own mistletoe moment (or NYE party kiss, or … ).

Oscars 2015: There's Apparently a (Truly Adorable) Hair Requirement to Be a Nominee

The nominees in the Best Actress category all have something in common. That is, besides major talent, a hugely in-demand calendar, access to amazing shoes and clothes and a glamorous jet-setting lifestyle. They also all got the memo that the only hairstyle to wear to the Academy Awards nominees luncheon is a cool-girl tousled bob.

Oscar Nominees 2015Getty (6)

In lengths ranging from “true bob” to “just-below-the-collarbone-pushing-the-lengths-of-bob-territory,” the best actress nominees (plus Emma Stone, because her hair looked that good and met the requirements) all sported a variation on the undone do that should give you plenty of hair inspiration for the rest of the month.

Clockwise from top left, Rosamund Pike and Marion Cotillard had the shortest cuts and the most sculpted waves, with just enough movement at the end for a saucy flair. Reese Witherspoon and Felicity Jones each had the messiest, most bedhead-y waves, complete with side-parted bangs and face-framing layers. And finally, the two redheads, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone, each rocked loose waves with a modern, flatironed effect.

We loved this hair coincidence so much that we can’t help but hope for the same coif coordination at the actual Oscars, but in the meantime, we’re picking a nominee a day for the next week to emulate.

Carrie Underwood: My Beauty Icon Is Reese Witherspoon - She's Another All-American Girl!

Carrie Underwood continues her reign as America’s sweetheart in her new sweet-as-pie — no, make that sweet-as-frosted-cake — commercial for Almay. In the ad, the makeup brand’s ambassador is a heavy dose of utterly adorable as she ices a cake while revealing her “guilt-free pleasure:” the brand’s Smart Shade Butter Kiss lipstick. Her favorite thing about the shades? How fool-proof they are. “I got the pleasure of getting a sneak peek of them way before anybody else,” Underwood tells PEOPLE. “I love that the names aren’t anything crazy, just things like ‘light berry,’ so even I can’t mess up!”

Not that the star is in much danger of that. The “All-American Girl” singer (and ad campaign star) is an old hand when it comes to doing her tour hair and makeup and once said “I don’t think I ever have makeup-free days, to be honest.” But when it comes to her personal beauty icons, she likes the “normal and natural” look. “I’ve always loved Reese Witherspoon. She kind of seems like a normal person in general. Any time I’ve ever talked to her, she’s just super sweet,” she says. “She just looks kind of like that all-American girl, you know?”

In a photo from the set, Underwood displays a childhood photo with her mom, and the sweet image gets us all the more excited for the 31-year-old expectant star to meet her son. The singer, who describes her day to day beauty look as “quick and effortless,” says she’s trying to pare down even more as she prepares for her new arrival.

“I’ve become friends with the round brush so I can style my hair as I blow it dry instead of blowing it dry then trying to curl it, which takes up a large portion of my time,” she says. “I still want to feel good about myself even as I’m just bopping around the house taking care of baby, but I wanted to try some new things that might make my life a little bit more simple!”

And don’t look for her to become schlubby just because she’s up all night feeding and changing diapers. “I like my comfy clothes, but I always have to have my hair and makeup somewhat done,” she says. “I might be wearing sweat pants but the rest of me is done up!”

Some people make sure to see every nominated movie before the Academy Awards. Some people tune in just for the fashion. PEOPLE style editors land in both categories. Regardless, our favorite thing to do is to predict what the stars will wear on the red carpet.

This means we’re hoping the night’s big nominees — Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone, Felicity Jones and Keira Knightley — shake things up a little bit. Oscars 2015: Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow and More Best Dressed (According to Our Editors)

Now that we’ve seen all the glamorous (and polarizing!) looks hit the Oscars red carpet, we’ve narrowed down our top picks below. (Don’t see your favorite? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments!)

Oscars 2015 Rosamund PikeJason Merritt/Getty

Sarah Kinonen, Editorial Assistant: I’ve fallen head over heels with Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike’s scarlet-hued scalloped strapless Givenchy Haute Couture number. I love the gown’s textured rose design, her monochromatic matching heels and her glamorous updo. Pike took a risk with this look, and it totally paid off: It’s a much bolder look than what we’ve been seeing on her all award show season. Plus, I still can’t believe the actress just had a baby — you’d never know it in this sexy number.

OScars 2015 Emma StoneJason Merritt/Getty

Catherine Kast, Style Writer: I’ll admit that when Emma first hit the carpet in this custom Elie Saab Haute Couture gown, I wasn’t in love with it (I really wanted her to pick this winged Valentino gown that editor Alex Apatoff chose for her). But after seeing it from a few different angles (hello, the back) and examining her Tiffany & Co. cuffs up close I grew to love it. Some might think that this chartreuse long-sleeved gown might have felt a wee-bit mother of the bride, but Emma herself is so far from that it’s almost comical. She’s a young spunky red-haired nominee who favors unforgettable fashion moments (remember the onesie at the Globes and a smoking-jacket inspired gown at SAGs?). Would I myself wear chartreuse? Probably not. But if I were Emma Stone, I’d probably be daring and clever enough to go for it.

Oscars 2015 Gwyneth PaltrowJason Merritt/Getty

Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director: Love her or hate her, you have to admit that Gwyneth Paltrow always wears something worth talking about on the red carpet and this pale pink Ralph & Russo Couture one-shoulder gown was no exception. The custom-made design was adapted from a look on the Spring/Summer 2015 runway and features a dramatic oversize rose. On anyone else, the dress may have come off as “Dynasty spring formal” (which is how one editor here described it), but I think Paltrow pulled it off like a pro and I love how she styled it with Anna Hu statement earrings and sleek hair.

Oscars 2015 Marion CotillardJason Merritt/Getty

Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor: I’m not going to lie to you, there was no one look on the Oscars red carpet that had me sending “🙌 🙌 🙌” to all my friends. Actually, this year, I thought the guys brought it much more in the style department than the ladies. But Marion came closest to wowing me on all fronts: Her Dior Haute Couture dress was beautiful and classic from the front, surprising and fashion-forward from the back, and her styling — including those Chopard gems and elegant updo — was unimpeachable. Next year, I’m hoping she brings this times 1,000.

Oscars 2015 Reese WitherspoonJason Merritt/Getty

Brittany Talarico, Style News Editor: Everyone thought Julianne Moore would be the one to wear Tom Ford, but Reese Witherspoon totally surprised me when she hit the red carpet in this black-and-white dress. It was one of the only dresses that screamed “I’m at the Oscars!” and it made her body look absolutely flawless. (She has a Barbie-size waist!) Her center-parted waves and statement earrings were the perfect finishing touchings. It might not have been the wild choice I was predicting for the star, but she was definitely the definition of glam.
