What to Wear This Weekend, From Barbeques to the Beach

Whether you’re packing your bags — or just have a packed schedule — this upcoming long weekend necessitates a little wardrobe planning. Below, find the looks that will take you from

Maria Menounos pink dress FameFlynet

Saturday night out: Celebrate longer days and warmer temps with some sultry al fresco dining (that may or may not lead to a night of dancing). Maria Menounos creates the perfect balance of sexy and sweet with this perfectly-fitted hot pink frock. It shows off her amazing bod with absolutely zero “try hard” vibe; you can get the same look with this swingy fuchsia American Apparel mini. We also love the fun details she added, including pretty purple polish (we like Essie “Playdate”), which popped against her jeweled yellow sandals (these fun $45 Tommy Hilfiger ankle-straps add color in a similarly fun way).

Sunday barbeque: We are usually too chicken to wear white anything near a table full of ribs and watermelon, but we’re feeling bold this weekend. So we plan to emulate Reese Witherspoon’s picnic-perfect look, which has everything we want in our Sunday outfit: long sleeves (it’s still a little chilly where we are), cute sandals and a sun-shading hat. Want to put it all together? Try this gingham shirt, these cute white cutoffs, these similarly studded sandals and the ultimate topper, a fun straw fedora. Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen and a big smile.

Hilary Duff bikini
FameFlynet

Monday by the pool: Two of the biggest trends for summer swimsuits are fringe and brights. Knock out both in one go (and look adorable besides) in a bikini like Hilary Duff’s boho halter top, which she pairs with a coordinating Theodora & Callum scarf. We love a huge sarong for the beach — it comes with us on the plane as a cozy scarf, serves as a wrap and sun shield during the day and can even tie into a dress for later that night. Steal her sexy look with this red fringed bikini and a cute, oversized wrap.

From Date Night to Brunch: Exactly What to Wear This Weekend

We should call this post, “One chambray shirt, three cute outfits.” It seems as though stars have been stepping out almost exclusively in the denim staple lately, and since we know you already have this versatile Bella Dahl top (if not, you should nab one with our exclusive discount), we wanted to show you some fun warm-weather ways to wear it — from a night out on Saturday all the way to work on Monday.

Miranda Kerr shorts Pacific Coast News

Saturday night: It’s hard to make denim-on-denim look chic (and not give off “going to the rodeo” vibes). But Miranda Kerr has mastered the trend in her Isabel Marant shorts with a light-wash chambray topper and sparkly flats, for an outfit that’s perfect for dinner with friends or a low-key date night (since there’s no guy alive who doesn’t drool over cutoffs). Check out this awesome DL1961 pair, then add ballet flats like these from Yosi Samra, or add some height with a fun colorful wedge like this pair by Nine West ($62.79).

Jamie Chung crochet shorts
All Access Photo / Splash News Online

Brunch: The Hangover: Part III actress is definitely bringing her fashion A-Game lately. (You may remember she made our round up last week.) And we definitely plan to recreate her latest summer-friendly look — crochet tap pants, a tie-font denim top and warm-weather appropriate desert boots. Get the look with these bottoms from Nordstrom ($48) and a pair of these Dolce Vita ankle boots, now 50% off! As for accessories, there’s no need to get the look for less; Jamie’s long beaded tassel necklace is only $19.50 at Loft!

Reese Witherspoon skirt
Ramey

Monday morning: We know — not everyone can show up to work in a denim top. But with the right fit (and a great, business-appropriate skirt), we think denim can work in most office atmospheres. Reese Witherspoon’s printed skirt and chambray shirt combo has “ideal Monday a.m. outfit” written all over it. Try out the actress’s look with a skirt like this candy-striped number by Asos ($61.09). It’s a great length, and you’ll really impress everyone with your sartorial skills if you pair it with a chic button-down (two editors in our office love this one from J. Crew.). If a shorter hemline is acceptable in your work environment, we’re loving this tribal print mini from Zara ($49.99). Then just add a ladylike pair of neutral heels and you’ll be starting the week off on a high note.

The theme of this week: No muss, no fuss. We’re all about looking cool without breaking a sweat, which is why these three looks were so appealing for a sticky summer weekend.

Jamie Chung dress Jim Smeal/BEImages

Saturday night: Eagle-eyed readers may notice that this is a three-peat for Jamie Chung in “What to Wear This Weekend,” but she’s definitely earned the distinction. Her latest awesome ensemble, worn to a Montblanc party in L.A., is noteworthy because it’s so super-simple but makes a major impact. The peach-and-pink Lovers + Friends “Dandy Dress” is both breezy and sexy at the same time and looks fab with some cute cap-toe pumps and layered necklaces. Toss on something similarly bright and effortless (this French Connection dress has a little more waist definition for curvier girls) and let the color do all the work for you.

Sunday Brunch: Repeat after us: Navy and yellow is the perfect summer color combo. Then take a look at how adorably effortless Reese Witherspoon‘s version of the look is. Another frequent flier in our “What to Wear” column, Witherspoon just gets low-key dressing right. Statement shorts like her blue paisley pair go best with a super-simple top (à la her navy tank) and the sunny accents on her shoes and bag take this from “thrown together” to “brunch ready.” Grab your own pair of chic silky shorts and these celeb-loved yellow Dolce Vita sandals to finish the outfit.

Pippa Middleton Wimbledon
Xposure

Monday morning: Shades of sky blue and periwinkle are instant mood-uppers on a gloomy Monday morning. Pippa Middleton‘s Sandro jacket is on sale (though her crazy-cute Sandro “Rapprochement” dress sold out — thanks a lot, Pippa!) but a similarly structured sheath and chic bouclé jacket (love those neon accents) will give you a similar look for less. Pretty nude accessories, like her Ash wedges, complete the look in no time.

This Week’s Best Dressed Star: Reese Witherspoon Stuns In Basic Black

Looks like black is back as a StyleWatcher fave! Not only did Reese Witherspoon blow away the competition in her simple black look at Benjamin Millepied’s dance benefit in L.A., your top four best-dressed stars this week are all wearing black numbers.

And though we are still wondering where all that summer color is (c’mon, ladies, it’s nearly July!) we can’t deny that Witherspoon kills it in this simple strapless look. The embellished hem really adds a pop of sparkle that keeps basic from being boring — and the mini length perfectly showcases her fabulous stems.

RELATED PHOTOS: Check out the rest of the Top 10 Best Dressed stars here!

We just wish she hadn’t stopped there, perhaps livening up the look with a neon clutch or bold blue pumps? Even her 13-year-old daughter Ava knows to brighten up basic black with a little color!

But you obviously thought she didn’t need to change a thing; despite some stiff competition from Zoë Saldana and Sandra Bullock in drop-dead dresses, Reese took the top spot by a landslide. Our takeaway from this week’s top 10: Safe and steady can trump the competition as long as there’s a little element of surprise.

Tell us: Do you think Reese Witherspoon deserved the top spot? If not, who did?

Wind down your July with some breezy, easy, super-simple looks that will take you from a flirty date to a three-mimosa brunch to a Powerpoint presentation with minimal effort. You can’t miss with any of them — we may just try all three!

Olivia Palermo skirt

Saturday night: Some nights you want to go all out and dial up the sex appeal to 11. And other nights you want to look cute with minimal effort, makeup and time. Olivia Palermo’s outfit fires on all cylinders — it has a gauzy skirt and a top you can unbutton for him, plus flats and and a hold-everything purse for you. Schedule a relaxed sunset picnic (heavy on the wine), slip into this and call it a night.

Tuck the chambray shirt you already have (right?) into this $14 Forever 21 skirt, add some leopard flats (this Mia pair has cute red trim and is only $44) and bring your favorite bag — anything goes with this easy ensemble. As for that wine: You can accessorize a bottle of Ooh La La chardonnay with a bottle opener-slash-cuff. Is someone out there reading our minds…?

Sunday brunch: And if you’re anything like us, once you’ve already started on a lazy weekend, that train is going full steam ahead. That’s why we love Kristin Cavallari‘s laid-back but put-together look.

The striped maxi skirt is polished and pretty, and the jean jacket and tucked-in top defines your waist to make sure you don’t get overwhelmed in all that fabric.

This Anthropologie skirt has the similarly diverting lines to keep the eye moving, and this fitted American Eagle denim jacket is an editor fave that can go anywhere. You’re on your own for that adorable, chubby-legged accessory, though.

Aubrey Plaza white dress

Monday morning: While we don’t necessarily advocate looking like you’re leaving the club when you stroll into work Monday morning, we totally stand behind this cute, relaxed and work-appropriate outfit courtesy of Reese Witherspoon.

Her tailored sateen J Brand black jeans and modest tee are the perfect foundations for a cool print-blocked blazer and two-tone black and white pumps, and her electric blue clutch is the perfect finishing touch.

This striped ModCloth tuxedo blazer gives a similarly funky, feminine feel — and you’ll wear these cap-toe pumps from now until eternity, trust us.

Reese Witherspoon StyleFameFlynet; AKM-GSI; Ramey

Do you ever stand in front of your packed closet, thinking you have nothing to wear? Maybe you should take a cue from Reese Witherspoon, who’s got her easy, breezy style down to a scientific formula. Cute, bright skirt + crisp top + ankle strap sandals = no-brainer wardrobe success.

RELATED PHOTOS: See more styles stars are loving right now!

Witherspoon is the master of girl-next-door style — she’s often spotted in perfectly fitted jeans and a cute V-neck sweater, or a pretty belted shirtdress. But the reason we’re loving her latest wear-everywhere look is that it feels fresh and put-together at a time when we find ourselves reaching for the same old jersey sundresses as summer winds down.

These styles are perfectly transitional from August to September – toss on a cardigan and blazer at night in a complementary shade or neutral if things start to cool down. Tell us: Are you loving Witherspoon’s latest style uniform? Where would you wear it?

What We’re Buying: Scarves With a Cause, New-Job Perfume, and Must-Have Sunglasses (Round Two!)

Last week, we decided that we didn’t want to hog the spending spotlight and only fill you in on what we’re buying–so from now on, we’re going to feature a “guest buyer” in addition to our editors. Our first guest? Dana Weiss, the amazing fashion blogger behind possessionista.com. Check out what she and our editors are buying this week–and click through to pick the items up for yourself.

H&M striped shirtCourtesy Dana Weiss

Dana Weiss, Possessionista: I’m kind of a scarf hoarder. Whether it’s a bad hair day, or a cold movie, I generally have a scarf in my bag to address any forseeable fashion emergency. Basically, I’m the MacGyver of scarves.

In particular, I’m a fan of fashionABLE, a line of scarves made by Ethiopian women. The premise behind fashionABLE is creating sustainable business in Ethiopia, where very few opportunities exist for women outside of prostitution. fashionABLE creates alternative means of employment for women in Ethiopia, and all the profit from fashionABLE goes toward rehabilitating former prostitutes, weaning them off drugs, providing shelter, medical care, job training, and a stable means of income. Which means these scarves don’t just warm your neck; they warm your heart.

I had the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia last month
and visit with the women of fashionABLE. Each scarf is named for one of the women in the program (to date, there are 83). Each scarf comes with an “able” statement ranging from being “able” to feel pride, to being “able” to put her son in school. I love knowing that looking fashionable can be so much more than just a fashion statement. It’s also a social statement. Which is always in style.

Check out the new fall collection–and fashionABLE’s first foray into leather goods–which includes a leather clutch I simply can’t live without. (Okay, I’m a clutch hoarder, too.) It’ll be available in early September at livefashionable.com.

Michael Kors perfumeCourtesy Annie Daly

Annie Daly, News Editor: I’m officially the new girl around the office–my first day was on Monday! So naturally, I spent all of last week prepping for my new job, aka treating myself to things I still can’t really afford, but justifying my purchases because I got a new job and therefore deserve it. Obviously.

My best buy was a shiny new bottle of my favorite perfume ever, Michael Kors—I love it because it’s flowery and light, but not too girlie, either. (Please note how I did not drop any sort of corny “just like me” line. You’re welcome.)

Anyway! The other reason I get down with this scent is that other people like it, too, which basically means that you’re bettering society every time you wear it. Exhibit A: My cab driver. The very night I bought the bottle, I spritzed it on and hopped into a taxi, and my guy goes, “Oh! You smell so nice. What are you wearing?” I reported that it was Michael Kors, and then he told me that I have good taste, especially because “so many women come in here and smell awful and I have to roll the windows down!” So if you want to do the cab drivers of NYC and elsewhere a favor, go MK. And if you ever need any help justifying any of your “necessary” purchases, hit me up.

H&M striped shirtCourtesy WestwardLeaning.com

Alex Apatoff, Contributor: Actually, this is “what we’re replacing” for me this week. After seeing every celebrity under the sun rocking a pair of these (seriously: The list of fans includes Selena Gomez, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, and more), I finally caved and got myself a pair of big-girl glasses, swearing that I wouldn’t leave them in a cab.

So now that I've left them in a cab, I was debating whether I should get another pair, and it honestly didn't take long to decide. Every friend who's tried them on looks amazing in them — they're like the sisterhood of the traveling sunglasses. They're flattering on everyone, comfy, come in a genius leather case that takes up zero extra space in my purse and sadly, they're worth having to go on a ramen-only diet for a few days. A girl has to have priorities.

The stars may be getting all done up for the Emmys on Sunday starting, oh, now, but we’ve still got the whole weekend to play around with our looks, right? Here’s what to wear to make it a memorable one.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Courtesy Rex/Startraks

Saturday night: You really can’t go wrong with a classic LBD. Ever. But even so, we still appreciate Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s special twist on everyone’s favorite go-to: cutouts. Plus, we love how she takes advantage of the it’s-fall-but-it’s-also-still-weirdly-warm-out weather by pairing her dress with a fun pair of black sandals.

Want to rock Huntington-Whiteley’s ensemble yourself? We suggest going with this similar cutout LBD from Bec & Bridge. It’s made of soft jersey material (read: it’s comfy), and it’s only $56.70. Then blowout your hair, put on your best strappy black sandals, and be sure to go minimalist on the accessories. And don’t forget to Insta it up because you’re gonna be looking good.

Molly Sims

Sunday brunch: Is it just us, or does Molly Sims’s outfit scream out-and-about Sunday? Her jeans-and-a-cute-top look is so versatile, we can just picture her rocking it during all of her essential outings. You know, like brunch. And boozy shopping after brunch. Again: essentials.

Since you probably already have a pair of amazing jeans, your first move is going to be scoring a cute striped collared blouse like hers. Check out this one from Allen B. — it’s got the fun, vertical-stripe thing going, and best of all, it’s only $27.99. Pair with some long gold necklaces, like this fun one from Kenneth Cole (only $45!), your over-the-shoulder bag, and you are officially ready to conquer your Sunday in style.

Olivia Palermo

Monday morning: After the Emmys on Sunday night, everyone at work is going to be a little tired. After all, it’s seriously stressful watching and critiquing all of the beautiful dresses, isn’t it? (Wink, wink.) The solution: Bring your outfit A-game like Reese Witherspoon did. We’re loving her business-y look, all the way from her white shirt and navy jacket to her black skirt and matching booties.

To make Witherspoon’s look your own, you’ve gotta start with the jacket first. We think this Apt. 9 quilted one from Kohl’s is a pretty close match — it even has the same black leather trim. And guess what! It’s on sale for $98, down from $140. Then go with on a black fit-and-flare skirt — try this $98 one from BCBGMAXAZRIA. We’re assuming you’ve got a pair of black booties, so throw those on, and you’ll be ready to start your work week off right.

Three Makeup Looks We Must Discuss: From Beginner to Advanced

We’ve all got a makeup routine that we swear by, but some days, you just want to put a little more effort in than swiping on mascara and lipstick and running for the door. Should you need some inspiration for those days, we’ve got three great looks, courtesy of three lovely stars, for you to pin. And yes, we’ve got all the exact products too. See them after the jump!

Reese Witherspoon Women in Hollywood makeupJB Lacroix/Wireimage

Reese Witherspoon‘s classic look at the Elle Women in Hollywood event was described by makeup artist Molly Stern as “a fresh look with a bit of seduction” — so yes, you’re going to want to take notes on this look for your next date night. Stern offers this tip for making sure your smoky eye never veers into “black eye” territory: Dot some illuminator on the inside of your lid to keep eyes open and shining.

Reese’s glowing bronze shadow is courtesy of Lancôme‘s Color Design Sensation Effects shadow in “Fashion Label,” and Eye Brightening All-in-One 5 palette in “Bronze Amour,” plus the line’s Artliner 24H in “chrome” and coats of L’Extrême mascara. Soft blush and a pale pink pout courtesy of Hourglass Femme “Nude” lip stylo and Lancôme Rouge In Love in “Jolie Matins.”

Ashley Madekwe Women in Hollywood makeupMichael Kovac/Getty

Also at the Women in Hollywood event, Ashley Madekwe kicked the difficulty level up a notch with a glossy red pout to pop against her black-and-white dress. Her makeup artist used three under-$10 L’Oréal products to achieve the polished look.

Want to try it at home? Achieve her bold cat eye with the line’s Paris Blackbuster Infallible eyeliner (the chubby marker-like shape makes it pretty easy to get the tricky liner look), then add coat of Voluminous Million Lashes mascara. Her red lip is achieved with Infallible Le Rouge in “Refined Ruby.”

Emma Roberts American Horror StoryTodd Williamson/Invision/AP

Finally, if you’ve been on the fence about trying frosty white liner, let Emma Roberts (and her Neutrogena makeup artist Amy Oresman) show you the way. “We decided to make Emma’s eyes the focal point of her look with a mod sixties feel,” Oresman said, which meant highlighting her lids with Neutrogena Crease Proof eyeshadow in “Forever Platinum” and topping them with Too Faced Glitter Glaze eyeshadow topcoat in “Silver Spark.” Three coats of Neutrogena Healthy Volume mascara in “Carbon Black” (Oresman recommends curling lashes after the third coat) made eyes pop more.

“On her lips we wanted a matte nude with more brown then pink,” Oresman shares. “I love Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in ‘Warm Caramel.’ I blotted the shine from the lip and use the extra as a soft cream color on Emma’s cheeks.” (Hey, one of our editors loves that trick too!)

Which of these looks are you most likely to try? Or will you give all three a go this weekend?

This Week's Best Dressed: Sandra Bullock Reaches Perfection

No arguments on who deserved the top spot in this week’s race for Best Dressed Star. The moment we saw Sandra Bullock step out at the Hollywood Film Awards in what is basically the world’s most perfect black dress, we knew we had an instant winner.

And with good reason: The DSquared2 creation (which earned her nearly 30,000 votes at press time) fit her body so perfectly it might as well have been painted on, and the lace detailing around her sweetheart neckline gave the perfect sexy counterbalance to the dress’s midi length. (Plus, it didn’t hurt that her waves and red lips were totally on point and on-trend.)

PHOTOS: See what other stars wore on the red carpet this week!

Giving Sandy a run for her money were two ladies in red: Reese Witherspoon in a simple yet stunning Calvin Klein Collection design (worn to Elle‘s Women in Hollywood event), and Kate Beckinsale in a draped Donna Karan dress (at the Pink Party).

But we really need to discuss our latest style crush, who apparently has also become your latest style crush: Lupita Nyong’o landed herself a spot in the Top 10 thanks to her yellow J.Mendel keyhole-cutout gown, selected for the Hollywood Film Awards.

Do you think Sandra’s dress deserved top honors, or are you more into Reese and Kate’s red-hot looks? And how excited are you to see what Lupita wears next?

Reese Witherspoon Gets a Chin-Length Bob: Do You Love Her Look?

We imagine Reese Witherspoon‘s holiday weekend was similar to ours: Lots of stuffing, a little online shopping and a trip to the salon (as good as an excuse as any to leave the house!).

The actress debuted a blunt above-the-shoulder chop Sunday (left), complete with a heavy side-swept bang. Witherspoon also went for a lighter, brighter blonde hue — another slight change from the warmer color she was sporting most recently.

RELATED PHOTOS: New cut! New color! Vote on all the big celebrity hair changes

But this chin-length chop is nothing compared to the star’s big mane change of 2013: going brunette (for her role in The Good Lie, in which she plays a woman who develops a friendship with refugees from the Sudanese civil war).

Do you like Witherspoon’s short blonde hair? Do you miss her brunette days? Should she grow her strands? Share your thoughts below!

Last weekend was full of dress-up opportunities, and there are plenty more coming down the pike. So we decided to give your sparkly minis and chandelier earrings a break, and opt instead for cool-girl, low-key looks that are comfortable and casual.

REese Witherspoon jeans
Ramey

Saturday night: Reese Witherspoon holds the unofficial title for best “Dressed-Up-But-Not-Really” everyday looks. We love this for a date night because it’s deceptively laid-back — your date will think you’re one of those cool low-maintenance chicks, when in reality every element was strategically chosen for maximum impact. Perfectly fitted jeans, sexy skin-baring pumps and a sheer black tee under a stylish jacket with leather pumps will definitely make the impression you’re hoping for.

This Ann Taylor jacket gets all of the fun details right for $159, these Charles David shoes were made to go with everything in your closet, and we know you’ve got the red lipstick to give it that final kick.

Jessica Biel jeans
Pacific Coast News

Sunday brunch: This is the second appearance in two weeks from Jessica Biel in the “Sunday Brunch” spot, and that’s for a good reason: She’s really got the look down to a science. Comfy straight-leg jeans (hers are Paige), a slouchy print cardi over your coziest tee and a cozy coat get a major pick-me-up from some polished accessories, like her textured satchel and piped Oxfords.

Grab your favorite jeans and coat, then pop on this cardigan (marked down even further thanks to this sale!), then add some oxfords with similar panache (thanks to the patent trim) and this quilted satchel also has classic “doctor’s bag” feel.

Emmy Rossum dress
Splash News Online

Monday morning: First things first: If you’re not in L.A., you should pop on some tights before leaving the house. Otherwise, we love Emmy Rossum’s look as-is: It’s perfectly put-together, but the mod details on the swingy dress and chic accessories (suede booties, gold-accented bag and Carrera by Jimmy Choo sunglasses) give it a little extra spice.

This way-marked-down Club Monaco dress has a similar look with a more fitted shape (though this one looks awfully cozy), and we like these booties for just the right touch.

Reese Witherspoon's Golden Globes Look Came to Her Stylist In a Dream - and More Amazing Scoop on Her Style!

Reese Witherspoon Golden GlobesWilliam Davila/Startraks

We like Reese Witherspoon‘s sweet style, but we love when she goes sexy, and she did just that at the Golden Globes Sunday night in custom Calvin Klein Collection and $3.7 million worth of Harry Winston jewelry. Her stylists gave PEOPLE the rundown from start to finish.

THE DRESS. Stylist Leslie Fremar came up with the color for Witherspoon’s gown in a dream, then tasked Calvin Klein with making it happen — and it certainly didn’t come together overnight. The collaboration began about a month ago and ended with one final fitting Sunday morning, culminating in a result Fremar was thrilled with. “I love the color. I love the fit. I felt like it was very modern. It was moving forward for her in terms of fashion,” Fremar tells PEOPLE. “I feel like it all came together like I wanted it to.”

Witherspoon herself contributed some design elements, like the striking racerback, and loved the dress enough to share a sketch on Instagram (below). “You could see it in her face, that she just felt really good in it,” Fremar says. “It was a collaboration and it really came together. Everyone was happy.”

One more fun element Fremar shared: The shoes were custom Christian Louboutins dyed perfectly to match. “I had them dyed the color of her dress, because I didn’t want any break in color,” Fremar says. “I sent them [a swatch] and they made the shoes to match.” Now that’s service.

RELATED PHOTOS: See more stunning Golden Globes gowns from all angles!

THE MAKEUP. Mai Quynh chose warmer colors to play off Witherspoon’s tan skin and ocean-hued gown. She used Laura Mercier’s eyeshadows in “Earth Glow” and “Fire Glow” plus liner in “Brown Copper” for a golden look. “A lot of people asked me, ‘Why didn’t you do a dark smoky eye?’” Quynh tells PEOPLE. “I just thought that would take away from everything and not be as fresh and modern. I wanted a brighter eye.”

And Witherspoon is happy to put herself in Quynh’s hands for the best beauty results. “She’s so great, she trusts you. And she’ll ask questions, like ‘What’s this?’ She’s so interested,” the makeup artist says. “So I’m kind of giving her a lesson while we’re doing it! And at the end she was like, ‘Great, I love it, thanks!’” Can you blame her?

THE HAIR. Stylist Renato Campora saw the dress the day before to come up with the look he calls “simple, sophisticated, modern, quite Calvin Klein.” He used L’Oréal hair products to create a graphic, defined bob for her that was a little angular, finishing it with the brand’s Advanced Hairstyle Sleek It Strand-Smoother Serum Spray to make sure the very clean look stayed that way all night.

“There are so many elements, [like] the earrings, you work around what is there. We wanted to open up her face to show the neck which is beautiful,” he tells PEOPLE. And while he’s open to Witherspoon’s suggestions, she trusts his vision, just like she does Quynh. And in the end, “Reese was very, very happy. She felt beautiful. For me, when you create a hairstyle, it’s important that you combine the personality of who it is” with the style itself, he says. And it shows in her the way Witherspoon worked that red carpet all night!

What did you think of her whole look? Is it fun to see the sketch and the finished product? Weigh in below!

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Metallic Heels, Sheer Inserts and Sleeves Only Stevie Nicks Could Pull Off

$

Trend report: metallic heels, sheer insertsGetty (2); Startraks

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw shiny soles, sexy sheer inserts and a dress with sleeves to sweep off the red carpet.

Up: Metallic Heels. Although metallic gowns were a major moment at the Grammys, some of our favorite ladies were wearing the trend on their feet this week. Emma Roberts (left) added some eye-catching metallic accents to her outfit at the Stand Up to Cancer Event with a rose gold Rebecca Minkoff clutch and matching Casadei heels. Rihanna selected some gold pumps to keep with the theme of her metallic Lanvin look while promoting her MAC Cosmetics collaboration. Reese Witherspoon also added some sheen to her feet while showing off her great figure in an orange Roland Mouret dress.

Up: Sheer Inserts. We love sheer inserts because they give a little sex appeal to even the most modest girl — without having it all hang out. Colbie Caillat and Beyonce both wore sheer panels with floral embellishments to the Grammy Awards. Instead of going for a basic crop-top, Chrissy Teigen (center) opted for an Adeam top with panels and matching pencil skirt. Camila McConaughey also sported white sheer panels in her strapless Pamela Rolland gown at the London Premiere of Dallas Buyers Club.

Down: Fringe Sleeves. We know many are in mourning for the end of American Horror Story: Coven — but Molly Sims took that to a whole new level. For her own little Stevie Nicks homage, the model wore a black shift dress with some intense fringed sleeves. While we appreciate her fashion risk with this larger-than-life arm decor, maybe we should leave the fringe to Misty Day. (All you AHS fans will appreciate that one!)

NYFW 2014: The A-Listers Finally Brave the Cold for Hugo Boss and Michael Kors

Whether it’s the cold (they’re all on their yachts in the Caribbean), the grueling pace of awards season (they’re all lying down somewhere with wine nearby) or some other mysterious reason, the stars haven’t been shining as brightly at this season’s New York Fashion Week. There are the stalwarts, like Solange Knowles and Anna Kendrick, who bravely attend every show (sometimes bare-legged!) but it’s been a long time since a February front row looked like this.

We were starting to wonder if the high-wattage stars were going to be staying indoors until the Oscars, but that ended Wednesday, as Michael Kors and Jason Wu (showing his first collection for Hugo Boss) lured some Hollywood heavyweights back from their private islands to take in the shows in N.Y.C.

For the Hugo Boss show (left) Reese Witherspoon jetted in from L.A., making a stop at Vogue before joining Gwyneth Paltrow (the face of Boss Femme Nuit and Jour fragrances) in the front row. “So excited for my friend @JasonWu,” Witherspoon wrote on Instagram. Paltrow also got in on the Insta game, posting a full-length shot of her chic black-and-white look, while Diane Kruger joined them before the show started, creating a trio of powerful (and impeccably dressed) Boss blonde bombshells. And yes, they did take a duckface selfie. It’s practically mandatory:

Check out the whole front row here — including Gerard Butler and Benedict Cumberbatch chatting up Anna Wintour.

Earlier that day, Michael Kors’s always celeb-studded front row (right) hosted Freida Pinto, Blake Lively and Rose Byrne, all in feminine looks with ’40s florals and flowy fabrics from Kors’s previous collections. We had a close-up view of the stars, and we can assure you that yes, Lively’s hair is that amazing in person.

Oscars Gown Showdown: Reese Witherspoon vs. Zoë Saldana -- Pick Your Favorite!

Oscar Gown Showdown: Reese Witherspoon, Zoë SaldanaFernando Allende/Splash News Online; Kevin Mazur/W

The Showdown: Reese Witherspoon in 2007 vs. Zoë Saldana in 2010
The Editor’s Pick: Zoë Saldana
Who Made the Call?: Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director
Why She Chose It:
Before I launch into all the reasons why I picked one of the most polarizing gowns to ever hit the red carpet, I need to confess that I changed my mind like seven times before I finally made peace with my decision. And by “made peace” I mean that I was about to miss my deadline so I was forced to choose one and move on.

What made it such a tough call is that I think Reese’s deep amethyst gown, designed by Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci, is the best thing she’s ever worn. The actress collaborated with Theyskens to create “something really fitted through the bust and hips,” the designer told PEOPLE back in 2007. The two worked out the details by phone (she was in Los Angeles and he was in Paris), with the help of sketches Theyskens sent to her. And here’s another fun fact: He had two mannequins with the actress’s petite proportions custom made. Two, because he actually made two dresses for Reese in case she changed her mind the day of the Oscars.

Check out the full Oscars Gown Showdown bracket here!

She (wisely) chose the bustier gown with a cascade of ruffles that faded in color from dark eggplant to pale lilac. Reese’s makeup artist Molly Stern told PEOPLE the decision was an easy one. “She said that it was the most beautiful dress she felt she’s ever worn.”

So what can trump 40 meters of purple silk jacquard from Switzerland constructed into a show-stopper just for Reese? Another purple ombré gown. Zoë Saldana’s Givenchy Couture (made by Riccardo Tisci) was straight off the runway and featured everything: sparkles, ruffles (upon ruffles) and a stunning color gradation. For some, the bold design catapulted Zoe to the top of the best dressed list. For others, it was a high-fashion disaster (many compared the ruffles to heads of cabbage). I loved that she took such a big risk at such a major event. She knew the dress would be polarizing, but she wore it anyway and because of her style cojones I’m giving her my vote.

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop On Mixing Prints, New Cutout Placements and the Skirt Silhouette That's Dragging (Literally)

Trend report: metallic heels, sheer insertsAlberto E. Rodriguez/Getty; Jason LaVeris/Filmmag

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw plenty of patterns, a fresh twist on an old favorite and a skirt that’s taking up too much room on the red carpet.

Up: Print Mixing. The idea of patterns fraternizing with one another can be enough to make anyone turn and run for their favorite monochromatic look. But Anna Kendrick’s floral pattern camel sweater and teal shorts and the multi-design dresses on Jennifer Connelly and Kristen Bell have us antsy to mix and match our pants off. All of the looks work because they chose color palates that complemented and didn’t fight each other. Now that these ladies have shown the rest how it’s done right, we expect more will follow suit.

Up: Cutouts in Fresh Places. All summer and fall we saw cutouts in the same places: the obliques, the tummy and basically any midsection area that required hundreds of crunches. But it looks like we’re allowed to eat carbs again because the outlines are migrating north toward the décolletage via slashes and open panels. Kate Mara discovered a new, sexy mid-cleavage opening in her Prada dress while Reese Witherspoon sported a black Valentino long-sleeved mini that had a unique scalloped shape at the neckline. At first glance America Ferrera’s outfit looks like a regular cap-sleeve gown, but after closer examination, we noticed the two subtle slits at the shoulders.

Down: Full-bodied Skirts. Though this skirt did have a major moment, it feels a bit much when compared to the more fitted designs we’ve seen recently on the red carpet. We are sure we will see a few similar styles at the Oscars, but after that, expect to meet more streamlined silhouettes. The pencil skirt has been making a comeback and as the temperatures get higher, we only expect the hemlines to rise as well.

Best Dressed of the Week: All Reese Witherspoon Needs Is an LBD to Take Out the Competition

PEOPLE.com readers really can’t resist a good LBD. Proof: This week’s best dressed star. Reese Witherspoon trumped two celebs in floor-skimming gowns for the title, and we’re not sure how we feel about it.

Don’t get us wrong: The actress looks amazing in the long-sleeve Valentino design (worn to the Great American Songbook event in N.Y.C.) featuring an on-trend scalloped neckline. Our favorite part of the look is her textured waves and sexy smoky eye, but in general we felt it was a safe move for the star who earned close to 23,000 “Love It Votes” (a 90 percent approval rating!) to beat out the competition.

Trailing Witherspoon’s stylish footsteps, Elizabeth Hurley nabbed the No. 2 spot in a slinky dove-gray halter with interlocking rings at the neckline at the London Royal Portrait Gallery event. She completed her glam look with a white fur coat and earned an 81 percent “Love It” rating from readers. And rounding out the top 3 was our personal favorite this week, Diane Kruger, who stunned in a white Elie Saab gown with a sheer skirt at the Better Angels premiere in Berlin.

Top Celeb Stylist Leslie Fremar Shares Her Favorite New York Fashion Week Looks

If you’ve ever liked a red carpet look you saw on Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron or Julianne Moore (we know you have!), then you’re a fan of celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar. Fremar (who was named the No. 1 stylist in Hollywood by the Hollywood Reporter) has recently added the title of Ask.com “Style Expert” to her impressive résumé, giving insight on all things fashion — whether on or off the red carpet. So of course we wanted to pick her brain on New York Fashion Week. See which looks she can’t wait to put her clients in, and get some fun dressing tips below!

Michael Kors
This black-and-white full length dress is modest, but still sexy, with beautiful sheer detailing and a flattering cut. The full arm detailing gives coverage to areas that women don’t always like to show off, yet it defines the waist. I was thrilled to see that Ask.com users who were polled about their favorite styles said they would opt for a flattering fit over trendy chic. This Michael Kors design is timeless and won’t go out of style, which is key in choosing pieces that make a great long term fashion investment.

Hugo Boss
Every woman needs a little black dress in her closet, and this Hugo Boss version is a modern take on the classic style. It’s the perfect cocktail dress to show off arms with this updated halter neckline, and the sequin and sheer detailing show a hint of leg that’s sexy without going overboard. People often ask about that one must-have dress, and every year I say the same thing: “A little black dress, it will always look timeless.”

The Row
Neutral colors are the easiest to wear. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s clothing line The Row made a black, cream and gray collection fresh and exciting for fall. This ultra-luxe cashmere turtleneck dress is gorgeous, simple and elegant, three traits my clients always request. Paired with boots, flats or even oxfords this dress would be a versatile statement in any woman’s closet.

Do you agree with Fremar’s picks? Who can you see in the styles? Share your thoughts below!
